Space... the next frontier. This statement is well known for it imperialistic ideals of the search for property. This statement was greatly exaggerated during the Space Race, a Soviet and American rivalry to reach space, in the midst of the Cold War. It seemed as though the gunshot for this race when off when the Soviets decided to use an intercontinental Ballistic Missile(ICBM) to launch and artificial satellite into space. It's known as Sputnik or traveler in Russian. The U.S. did not take this lightly and attempted their own launch of a satellite known as Explorer 1.

Shortly after the launch Dwight Eisenhower created a program known as National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA). He partnered this program with two other programs he had started. They were the U.S. Air Force and the Central Intelligence Agency(CIA). At this point the race had begun to heat and the Soviet's had hit the moon with a probe known as Luna 2. Afterwards they also had Yuri Gagarin, a Russian, to be the first man in space that reach this point in Vostok 1. The U.S also hoped to do such so they created a program known as project Mercury. Alan Shepard was the first American in space in 1961. Although the U.S. did not wish to stop there. On July 16, 1969 Neil Armstrong was the first man to set foot on the moon.

The climax of the Space Race seemed to end shortly after a man set foot upon the moon. Then after the soviets made many for launch attempts and failed several times. In 1975 the U.S. sent astronauts into space to meet at the Russian space station. They docked at the port of the station to meet cosmonauts from Russia. A handshake solely occurred upon the the station. This marked a growing ease to the Cold War and its tension.
