Before the Berlin Wall arose many emigrants were leave East Germany to seek freedom. This did not entirely end even after the wall was standing. In just two weeks time the police force and volunteers had completed a makeshift wall equipped with barbed wire and made of concrete. The was was favored by the President Mr. Kennedy. "A wall is a hell of a lot better than a war." This wall didn't hold of emigration very well so a short period of time later a better wall was established. It stood twelve feet tall and was four feet wide. With the establishment of this was the deaths seemed to rise. This was due to the traps lane upon the wall to prevent anyone from making it over. Even if someone were to make it past sand was lane next to the wall to see if anyone had made it over. If this was discovered the person was searched for and killed.
